He gained inspiration from Byzantine Church art and the Italian Renaissance, incorporating fruits, flowers and exotic birds in to his designs. Birger Kaipiainen (1.7.1915-18.7.1988) is one of the most famous and internationally awarded ceramic designers of Finland. Birger Kaipiainen made a long career at Arabia Art Department creating thousands of unique artworks and also designing several tableware e.g. Apila and Sunnuntai in 1970. Birger Kaipiainen (1915-1988) was one of Finland's most successful modern ceramic artists. After graduating from the Central School of Arts and Craft, Kaipiainen began his work in the art department of the famous Arabia factory in Helsinki, where he mostly decorated vases and dishes. Kaipiainen is strangely unique among Arabia ceramic artists in the sense that he almost exclusively focused on producing unique art pieces, and only on rare occasions ventured into designing mass-produced tableware.
